 She starred with Ellen Burstyn in Hanna's War and starred opposite Antonio Banderas and Armand Assante in The Mambo Kings and in Bellocchio's highly acclaimed Devil in the Flesh which was very controversial as the first major film to feature a well-known, mainstream actress performing unsimulated oral sex on screen. Maruschka Detmers later expressed some regret at the scene because she said it overshadowed her other accomplishments.
